An appropriate Next Year In tribute to the Prince of Pop (via KabobFest):
Category Archives: Deaths
I just read that William Zantzinger has passed away. Zantzinger killed poor Hattie Carroll with a cane that he twirled around his diamond ring finger at a Baltimore hotel society gathering. (Those are Bob Dylan’s words, not mine.) The incident is best remembered because Dylan wrote a great song–one of his best protest songs–about Zantzinger’s murder of Carroll, a black woman, and the six-month sentence that he received for it.
If you want to know more about Hattie Carroll and William Zantzinger I really recommend this piece from a few years ago by Ian Frazier. It catches up with Zantzinger’s story forty years after his sentence and finds out what some of Hattie Carroll’s friends had to say about the murder. It will make you think about how we remember.
You can read Zantzinger’s obit here.
