Jan. 14 (Bloomberg) — Bolivian President Evo Morales cut diplomatic relations with Israel over its “attacks against humanity” during a 19-day offensive in the Gaza Strip.

“The crimes of the Israeli government bring the world back to the worst years,” Morales said in remarks distributed by official state newswire ABI. “In light of these attacks against humanity, Bolivia is cutting diplomatic relations with Israel.”

Israel doesn’t maintain an embassy in Bolivia. Israeli Ambassador Salid Mansour, who works out of Peru, also leads Israel’s diplomatic efforts in Bolivia.

The move shouldn’t affect economic relations between the two countries, Bolivian Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca told reporters in La Paz today. He denied that Iranian officials asked Bolivia to cut relations with Israel. An Iranian delegation met with Morales yesterday in La Paz.

The phones at the Israeli Embassy in Lima weren’t answered and it wasn’t possible to leave a message.
